The Eternal Security of The Believer

by Jim Murriner

I want us to look this morning at something which you can have great comfort in if you are saved, but at the same time something very great which you are missing if you are not saved.

I. First I want us to look at Old Testament Scripture which teach eternal security.

Psalms 125:2
“As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.”
Samuel 22:2
“And he said, The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;”
Psalms 18:2
“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
Psalms 28:1
“Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
Psalms 27:5
“ For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.”

II The Old Testament and the New Testament are in harmony concerning the eternal security of the believers.

Psalms 37:28
For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
and II Tim. 4:18
“And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Psalms 95:7
“ For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,”
and John 10:27 – 28
27“ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
28 “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

Prov. 3:26 “ For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. “
and Jude 1:24
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Joshua 1:5  “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
and Heb. 13:5
“Let your] conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

III We have many illustrations in the Old Testament of God’s eternal security of the saints.

Job 1:10 – 12

10 “Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.”
11 “But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.”

Now as Satan is allowed to bring great problems upon Job. We see Job in
chapter 13: verse 15 still with faith in God.

Job. 13:15 Job’s faith was in the power of God. Job. 23:13

Job, believed in all of this being the will of God
Job 28: 10

A. We have many in the Old Testament who sinned, and yet nemer became lost, Abraham , David, Solomon, Samson, Jocob.

Heb. 11: 13

Though David with all of his sin never became lost again, he lost the joy of his salvation.

David was not happy and David was bothered because of his sin.

Psalms 41:4 ; Psalms 118:4 ; Psalms 51:12

IV There is much talk about angels today. The bible tells us that for those who are saved, God provides special protection by angels.

Rather than us having a single guardian angel, we have great numbers of angels helping us in many ways.

Psalms 34:7 ; Daniel 3:28 (only for those who trust in Jesus Christ as saviour.)

Psm. 68:17 ;

In II Kings 6: 8 we have a record of Elisha and his servant. The servant sees the mighty Syrian army surrounding them, and is in great fear.

However Elisha simply prays not for deliverance , but for God to reveal His protecting Angels unto the servant.

II Kings 6:16

There is no chance for the elect of God to fall from salvation, because God keeps us by His power, and uses His angels that we have seen in these verses to keep us from getting into any more sin than we do.

God’s preservation goes back before time. His preservation of His saints, is an eternal preservation.

Heb. 9:12 Not just eternal in the future, but also in the eternal past.

Romans 8:30 ; Rev. 13:8

V Jesus is the “Great Shepherd” of the “sheep” and whether it be the Old Testament “sheep” or the New Testament “sheep” He has taken our iniquity upon Himself , and shed His blood for us.

Isaiah 53: 6 Heb. 13:20
